Arched tops, angled windows under a roofline, circles, and older openings that have settled out of square are the windows off-the-shelf products handle worst. Everything I sell is custom measured and custom made, so these shapes are part of normal work for me. Here is what I install on them and how the measuring and pricing work.

Plantation shutters built to arches and angles
Every plantation shutter I install is custom-configured, with special shapes for arches and angles, and built to the measured shape of each opening so it arrives ready to hang square and true. Arched tops, angled frames, and extra deep or shallow sills all have shutter solutions.
Shutters are also cordless by design and come in a curated range of whites, off-whites, and wood stains, which I bring as real samples. See shutters installation for how I fit specialty shapes on install day.
Specialty shapes from the brands we install
Arches, angles, and other special shapes are measured and built to fit, so even your hardest windows get a clean, custom look. Which product suits a given shape depends on the window, and I lay out the options for each one during the estimate. The brands and controls I carry are on our brands and options page.
Arched and angled windows above a great room
Many great rooms pair a row of standard windows with arched or angled shapes tucked under the roofline. The rectangular windows on that wall are usually strong candidates for motorization, and I plan the shaped windows above them at the same visit. Transoms above doors and windows fall in this group too. My guide to motorized shades for tall windows covers those walls in more detail.
Older homes: curved tops, settled frames, and segmented glass
Historic Des Moines homes often have tall windows, sometimes with a curved top or a divided pane pattern, and frames that have settled over the decades. Settled frames get shimmed and squared, and where a window is out of square, an outside mount can cover the crookedness. Ornate or angled trim can complicate an outside mount, which is one more reason I check every opening in person. My guide to inside vs outside mount explains how I decide.
Converted loft windows can be arched or segmented into multiple panes. Sometimes one continuous shade across the whole opening looks cleanest, and other times matching the shade width to the window's own divisions respects the architecture better. More on both in my posts on historic Des Moines homes and downtown lofts.
Measuring and pricing specialty shapes
Specialty shapes take custom fabrication, and that adds to the price. My quotes are broken down window by window, with any specialty shape priced on its own line, so you can see exactly where the budget goes and decide whether to do the shaped windows now or later. My plantation shutters cost guide explains what moves the number.
The way to get a real answer for an unusual window is a free in-home estimate. I measure every shaped opening myself, bring samples you can hold against your trim, and hand you an itemized quote with no obligation. Call (515) 850-9700 or request your free in-home estimate.
