Alternating bands of sheer and solid fabric slide past each other as the shade adjusts, so the same shade shifts from softly filtered light to solid privacy with one motion. Because the bands read as strong horizontal lines, a crooked or ill fitting banded shade announces itself immediately. I measure every window by hand and level every install, so the lines stay crisp and parallel with your window, not fighting it.

Rooms where banded shades work best

Banded shades earn their keep in rooms where you adjust the light several times a day. Living rooms, dining areas, kitchens with a view, and home offices are their strongest rooms, and they suit the big windows and clean lines of newer homes around the metro.

In neighborhoods where homes sit close to the sidewalk, the sheer setting keeps daytime light coming in while limiting what passersby can see. They also work well in updated rooms of older houses when you want something fresher than standard blinds. If a room leans heavily traditional, a Roman shade may feel more at home, and I will tell you so at the estimate.

Banded shades vs roller shades

A banded shade runs on a roller like a standard roller shade. The difference is the fabric. A banded shade is a single loop woven in alternating sheer and solid stripes, so two layers hang in front of the glass and slide past each other as the shade moves.

A roller shade is one smooth panel of fabric, available from light filtering to solar screen to true blackout, and it is essentially invisible when raised. A roller is the better pick when a room needs one setting, like a blackout bedroom. Banded is the better pick when you want to fine-tune light and privacy through the day with one shade.

Fabric colors and band widths

The banded shades I install are custom made by Alta and sized to your exact window. Fabric colors run from airy whites and soft grays to warm linens, taupes, and deep charcoals. Band width changes the look as much as color does:

Banded shades operate as simply as any roller shade. Cordless lift is my standard recommendation for homes with kids, and all corded products have been discontinued for child safety.

Motorization makes the most sense on the windows banded shades tend to cover: wide living room windows, tall two-story glass, and sliders behind furniture. One press moves a whole bank of shades together and stops the bands at the same height on every window. Schedules can open the shades at sunrise and close them for evening privacy.

Can you see through banded shades at night?

In sheer mode, some visibility from outside exists at night with interior lights on, like any sheer. Slide to the solid position for evening privacy, which takes about a second.

Are banded shades the same as zebra shades?

Yes, banded, zebra, dual, and layered shades are different names for the same alternating sheer and solid design.

Do banded shades come motorized?

Yes, and they are a great motorization candidate since precise band alignment is exactly what a motor does well. Remote, app, and voice control are all available.

Can banded shades darken a bedroom?
