Cordless and Motorized Window Treatments for Homes with Kids and Pets

Dangling window cords are a documented strangulation hazard for young children, and pets get tangled in them or chew them. Every product I sell is cordless or motorized for child and pet safety, and all corded products have been discontinued. That settles the safety question before we pick a color. What is left is choosing the right lift for each room, and here is how I handle it in homes with toddlers, cats, and dogs.

Cordless blinds with no dangling cords in a child friendly Des Moines area home

Why I remove cords entirely

A looped cord within reach of a crib, a toddler bed, or a couch a child likes to climb is a strangulation risk, and an accident happens fast and makes no sound. That is why window covering standards have shifted so firmly against accessible cords.

Older blinds are the biggest concern. If your home still has blinds with long looped cords, especially in kids' rooms, they were made under older rules. Cord cleats and shorteners help, but they depend on everyone using them correctly every day. Removing the cord is the fix that cannot be forgotten. My cordless blinds safety guide goes deeper.

How a cordless lift works day to day

A spring-assisted lift system inside the headrail holds the blind or shade at whatever height you leave it. You raise it by lifting the bottom rail with one hand and lower it with a gentle pull. Slats tilt with a wand or by hand, depending on the product.

Without a cord lock or loose cords, there is simply less to wear out, and a good cordless blind sits level all the way across. For wider treatments, a slim wand control raises, lowers, and tilts with one hand and has no cords either.

Cordless options in every product line

Cordless is a lift style available across nearly everything we sell, in every color, stain, slat size, and material:

  • Faux wood blinds: wipe clean, stand up to sticky fingers and pets, and handle playrooms and kitchens.
  • Real wood blinds: warm hardwood for living rooms, offices, and bedrooms.
  • Honeycomb and roller shades: a softer look anywhere, including blackout versions for bedrooms.
  • Roman shades: lined and blackout options, with cordless lift to keep them safe in kids' rooms.
  • Woven wood shades: natural texture, with cordless, wand, and motorized lifting controls.
  • Plantation shutters: cordless by design, with no pull cords or chains, one of the safest treatments you can choose.

Motorized shades: remote and app control with zero cords

Motorized treatments have no operating cords at all, and they solve a second problem too. Cordless lifts still require you to reach the shade, which can mean kids climbing furniture to yank on blinds and cats and dogs batting slats out of shape. A motorized shade moves from a remote on your nightstand or an app on your phone, so small hands and paws have nothing to pull on.

For nurseries and kids' rooms I present motorization as the premium option alongside cordless. For tall windows in those same rooms it is often the only option that is both safe and usable. Battery powered motors install without running new wire. See the motorization page and my honest take on whether motorized blinds are worth it.

Nurseries and kids' bedrooms: cordless and dark

Anything in a child's room should be cordless, with no dangling loops anywhere a crib or toddler bed might someday sit. Those rooms also need darkness that survives nap time and early summer sunrises. Blackout honeycomb shades with a cordless lift and lined Roman shades both handle this well.

Light leaking around the edges is the most common blackout complaint, and side channels or an outside mount close most of that gap. Add a motor and you can lower the shade from the rocking chair, or set it to rise at seven so the room brightens on cue. My guide to blackout shades for bedrooms and nurseries covers the details.

Fit and installation for cordless treatments

Cordless blinds reward careful measuring. You lift and lower them by the bottom rail, so a blind even slightly too wide drags against the frame, and one cut too narrow shows daylight down both edges. I measure every window myself, order to those exact numbers, and install everything personally.

I often mix the two in one house: cordless wherever hands can reach and motorized on the tall windows, all matched in color and style. Motorized shades get programmed, tested, and demonstrated on install day before I leave. The cost difference for cordless is usually smaller than parents expect.

The free in-home estimate is the easiest place to start. I bring cordless samples you can raise and lower with your own hands, measure every window myself, and give you an itemized quote with no obligation. Call (515) 850-9700, seven days a week, or request your free in-home estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Are your blinds and shades safe for kids and pets?
Yes. We fit cordless and other safer lift systems so there are no hanging cords within reach, and all corded products have been discontinued for child safety.
Do cordless blinds cost a lot more?
The cost difference is usually smaller than parents expect. I recommend cordless as the starting point in any home with young kids or pets, and the itemized quote shows exactly what it adds.
Should I choose cordless or motorized for a nursery?
Cordless is my default for any child's room. Motorization is the premium option, and for tall windows in kids' rooms it is often the only choice that is both safe and usable.
Are plantation shutters safe around kids and pets?
Yes. Shutters are cordless by design, with no pull cords or chains, which makes them one of the safest window treatments you can choose.
